A számítógép hajnalán – Neumann Jánosra emlékezve\n
\n
Érdemeihez képest mindképpen kevesen ismerik a számítógép atyjaként tisztelt Neumann János nevét – szögezte le Kovács Győző budapesti informatikus, elismert Neumann-kutató aki az Erdélyi Múzeum-Egyesület Matematikai és Informatikai Szakosztálya és az EMT közös rendezvényén, január 24-én az EME székházában tartotta meg Neumann János élete és munkássága című előadását. Az előadás nem annyira Neumann János munkásságának eredményeire, mint inkább életrajzi érdekességeire tért ki.\n

Neumannról például nem lehet biztosan tudni születési helyét: nagy valószínűséggel a Budapesten akkoriban igen népszerű zsidó korházban született, és nem a Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utcai házban, ahol nevelkedett. Neveltetésére nagyban rányomta bélyegét az a budapesti zsidóság körében akkoriban igen elterjedt nézet, amely szerint nem érdemes vagyont gyűjteni, hiszen az nagyon könnyen füstbe mehet. Neumann igen tehetős nagyapja és édesapja is osztozott azon a nézeten, hogy „befektetni" leginkább a gyerekekbe érdemes.\n

Jómódú család lévén a Neumannoknak módjában állt gyermekeik számára biztosítani az idegen nyelv tanulását otthon: megtanulhattak franciául és németül a szakácsnőtől, illetve a szobalánytól. Neumann János és testvérei tehát soha sem jártak elemi iskolába, hanem egy közeli tanintézmény igazgatójánál vizsgáztak évente egyszer. Mire János negyedikes lett volna, lehetősége nyílt megtanulni még angolul is, ugyanis édesapja Németországból két angol úrral érkezett haza. A két férfi Németországban rekedt, és csak Neumann Miksa közbenjárására hagyhatták el az országot magyarországi útlevéllel. Ők azok, akik meglepődve állapítják meg, hogy a Neumann családnak nincsen könyvtára – sugallatukra pedig Neumann Miksa megvásárolja a König könyvtárat.\n

Kovács Győző előadásából kiderült továbbá, hogy Neumann édesapja szinte megszállottja volt az ógörög nyelvnek. Ezek után az sem meglepő, hogy János megtanulja ezt a nyelvet is.\n
\n
Kivételes matematikai készségeit a középiskolában fedezik fel először, ahol testvére, Neumann Miklós visszaemlékezése szerint fel is mentik a matematika alól. A Neumann család legendáriuma szerint János nem rajongott a történelemért sem, így kérte, hogy mentsék fel abból is. Az anekdota szerint a történelem professzor megdöbbenésére János a König könyvtárban megtalálható 41 kötetes világtörténelmet tanulta meg a nyári vizsgára.\n

A középiskolát Neumann a budapesti evangélikus gimnáziumban végzi. Kovács Győző előadásában arra is kitért, hogy ez a választás nem éppen véletlen, lévén, hogy a zsidótörvények miatt a Neumann család sokáig gondolkodott azon, hogy áttérjenek katolikus vagy evangélikus vallásra. Ilyen szempontból is érdekesnek számított a család: csak néhány zsidó ünnepet tartottak, vallásosak voltak, ám csak elvétve jártak zsinagógába, sőt néhány keresztény ünnepet is megtartottak.\n

Az előadó rávilágított arra is, hogy Neumann a nemesi rangot nem tudományos eredményei elismeréseként kapta, hanem vásárolta. Ekkor veszik fel a Margitai előnevet is. A Neumann család címere többek közt egy kakast is tartalmaz. Kovács Győző szerint ez egy újabb anekdota által kötődik Jánoshoz, amely szerint még kisfiúként vidékre utazott szüleivel, és éppen akkor jött rá a szükség, amikor egy baromfiudvarban szemlélődtek. Amikor a kisfiú könnyíteni szeretett volna magán, egy kakas zokon vehette a dolgot, mert János elé ugrott, és megcsípte – a fütyijét.\n

Neumann karrierje először nagyon messzire elüt a matematikától: édesapja tanácsára vegyészmérnöknek készül, de meglehetősen hamar visszatér a matematikához. Göttingában dolgozik, egészen addig, amíg ki nem neveznek az egyetem élére egy náci tisztet. Tulajdonképpen a náci Németországnak ez a gesztusa az, amitől betelik Neumannál a pohár. Elfogadja az amerikaiak ajánlatát, és Princetonban folytatja karrierjét, matematikusként. 30 éves, amikor megszerzi a professzori rangot, és ezzel ő lesz a történelem legfiatalabb professzora.\n

Neumann nem csak a híres IAS számítógép elkészítésével foglalkozik, hanem besegít többek közt az atombomba elkészítésébe is. Feltételezések szerint éppen ez okozza a halálát: az első atombomba felrobbantásakor tüdejébe radioaktív por került. Munkásságának emlékét – többek közt az előadó érdemeként is – Princetonban, Aberdeenben és Los Alamosban három tábla is őrzi.\n
